Designer Spotlight: Christian Siriano

Most of you should recognize Christian Siriano from Project Runway, where he was named the fourth, and youngest, winner.  But since the show, Siriano has become quite the established designer.

Siriano was born in 1985 in Annapolis, Maryland.  From a young age, he had an interest in fashion, and even began to design clothes at the age of 13.  He applied to the Fashion Institute of Technology, but was rejected, and instead headed to London, England to attend the American InterContinental University.  In his senior year of college, he became an intern at Vivienne Westwood, and then later at Alexander McQueen.  After college, he headed to New York, where he worked as a freelance make-up artist and designed wedding dresses.

In 2007, Siriano auditioned for the fourth season of Project Runway.  During the show, he won four challenges and was noted for his avant-garde inspired designs.  He made it to the top three and showed his Musketeer-inspired collection at New York Fashion Week.  Siriano was announced the winner of the show, which entitled him to a fashion spread in Elle Magazine, a 2008 Saturn Astra, and $100,000 to start his own line.   He also won the season’s “Fan Favorite” Award and was awarded $10,000.

Since the show, Siriano has been busily working in the fashion industry.  His collection, titled Christian Sirano, has been one of the most popular year in and out on the runway.  In 2010, his line had been reported to have brought in over $1.2 million in revenue.  Siriano also has been working with Payless Shoes stores since 2009.  In 2011, his collection grew even bigger, and he has a new contract which will have him designing four collections every year.  He has also ventured into makeup, creating a line for Victoria’s Secret in 2009.  Siriano also wrote a book, Fierce Style: How to Be Your Most Fabulous Self, in 2009, which allowed him to go on a national book tour.

And thanks to Project Runway, Siriano has now become a part of pop culture.  He has been a guest on Bravo’s Make Me a Supermodel show, appeared as himself on an episode of Ugly Betty, and even received his own one hour special on Bravo called Christian Siriano: Having a Moment.

As for right now, Siriano’s still living in New York City with his boyfriend of five years, singer-songwriter Brad Walsh.  He has just released his 2012 Autumn/Winter collection.  In the meantime, expect to see the young designer continuously producing collections for fashion weeks to come.
