Inspired By…Solange Knowles
Solange Knowles is more than just Beyoncé’s little sister.
The 28-year-old singer first ventured into music when she was commissioned to sing the theme song for Disney Channel’s The Proud Family, with backup vocals provided by Destiny’s Child. Solange followed this with a couple songs on various soundtracks before ultimately releasing her first album, Solo Star, in 2003. She then began acting in movies, with roles in both Johnson Family Vacation and Bring It On: All or Nothing. A second album followed as well as an EP, True, in 2012 which received critical acclaim and leaned more towards a new wave sound. In her personal life, Solange is the mother to Daniel Julez, whom she had at the age of 18, and most recently appeared in the news for an altercation between herself and her brother-in-law Jay-Z in an elevator following the 2014 Met Gala.
In terms of fashion, Solange is a stand out in the celebrity world. She’s often celebrated for her bold color choices, love of print, and retro style, as well as her decision to grow her natural hair and wear it in a nostalgic but modern afro. Tips for dressing like Solange include sporting lots of prints, focusing on bold colors, and accessorizing with lots of jewelry.
This first look features Solange back in August 2011, on her way to the Bean Pole and Kim Jones block party at the Opening Ceremony flagship store in New York City. For a stylish last week’s of summer look, select bright floral printed trousers, a simple spaghetti strap white tank top, and tan flat sandals. Accessorize with gold jewelry, including a collar necklace and hoop earrings.
In this second look, Solange is at Coachella 2013. This fun outfit featuring a lemon dress and floral heels can easily be adjusted to a quirky dinner outfit. Go with a basic yellow shift dress, floral or printed chunky heels, and a simple black cross body bag. Add a black blazer if you’d like to help elevate your look.
This final look is of Solange at the 2013 Met Gala. Look to this punk-inspired (that was the theme that year) red carpet outfit for a fun night on the town. For this look, I’d choose either a short, zig-zag printed blue dress with cutouts or a blue maxi dress with a high slit, black heels, and black drop earrings.
Solange’s style is perfect for those who want to stand out in the crowd of monotony. Just remember to feature bold colors, lots of prints, retro styles, and accessorize with fun jewelry when looking to Solange for style tips!
