Rihanna is the First Black Woman to be Named Face of Dior
This is a big deal. Pop singer and fashion maven Rihanna is the first black woman to be chosen as the face of Dior. While celebrities and supporters of the brand are singing praises and nodding in respect and acknowledgement to the high fashion house, a lot of us are shocked this hasn’t happened sooner. After all, Dior has been around for 70 years. As the new face of the French brand, Rihanna will be featured in the fourth installment of Dior’s film and print “Secret Garden” video montage for the Spring 2015 campaign. Photographer Steven Klein will be behind the lens for the couture gown shoot that takes place at the Palace of Versailles. Rihanna says of the honor, “It is such a big deal for me, for my culture, for a lot of young girls of any color.”
While this is an immense landmark for the “FourFiveSeconds” singer, it’s far from her first venture in the world of fashion. She was recently announced as the creative director of Puma, starred as the face of Balmain’s SS14 campaign, and modeled for Armani Jeans. The CFDA’s Fashion Icon winner doesn’t seem to be slowing down in her slow but steady high fashion reign, and we can only hope her achievements will serve as inspiration for other high-end brands in promoting diversity.
