Designer Spotlight: Stella Jean
Stella Jean is an emerging Haitian-Italian fashion designer and former model. Her cultural identity often provides inspiration for her glamorous label. The style of Stella Jean reflects and evokes her Creole heritage by blending old continent cultures with new. She merges the opposites in femininity and combines it with Italian haute couture craftsmanship, thus giving the clothes a sensual elegance. Stella Jean’s signature “Wax & Stripes Philosophy” reflects a mood reminiscent of her own multicultural personal journey, stylistically balancing a synthesis of cultures that seems to be diametrically opposed. “Wax” represents her maternal roots, Haiti, by drawing its history in part from West Africa. The masculine “Stripes” present on shirts, symbolize her father, who is from Turin. The “Wax & Stripes Philosophy” thus professes and projects the culture of encounter: the two cultures never negotiate their own membership, instead mixing in response to the needs of the times. Stella Jean perfectly mixes the two cultures in her designs that provide for a unique line that shines from others. The blend of African prints and Italian fashion is one that has never been seen before, and it evokes a sense of beauty and class on the wearer.
